Stanley H. GILBERT OBITUARY
HAMPTON – Stanley H. Gilbert Jr., M.D., died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011.
Dr. Gilbert was born in Pottstown, Pa., July 14, 1928, to Stanley H. Sr. and Mildred L. Gilbert. He had one brother, Louis. He attended Ursinus College for his undergraduate degree graduating in 1949 and Temple University Medical School graduating in 1953.
He met his wife, Jacquelyn R. Keller, while attending Ursinus College and were married in 1951. They had six children, Jonathan, Christian, Timothy, Jeremy, Jenifer and Melissa. They were divorced in 1981.
Dr. Gilbert had a successful and rewarding medical career. He was a pediatrician in Yorktown Heights from 1955 to 1981. In addition he served as chief of pediatrics at Northern Westchester Hospital and as the school physician for the Yorktown School district and the Yorktown High School Athletics program. He practiced medicine in Bridgeport Connecticut from 1981 to 1989 and then in Hampton Virginia from 1989 until his retirement in 2001. He was recognized by the American Association of Pediatrics, Virginia chapter, for his outstanding service on childhood obesity. He traveled to South Africa as part of a medical mission on HIV/AIDS after retirement.
Dr. Gilbert was a prominent citizen in the communities in which he lived, including Yorktown Heights, N.Y., and Hampton, Va. In Yorktown, he served as an elder in the First Presbyterian Church, and later served as an elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Hampton, Va. His compassion and medical training came together in the 1970’s when he became one of the early physicians to work with disadvantaged youth and drug abusers in Westchester County, N.Y. In Virginia, his citizenship continued with his volunteer service to the Virginia Symphony.
He was an avid sailor, camper, craftsman, artist and musician.
He is survived by his six children, 15 grandchildren; longtime companion, Barbara Lawson; and pet cat, Tosh.
A memorial and interment service is planned for 1 p.m. on Jan. 7, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., with reception immediately following at the church.
